The quintessentially English sport of Crown Green Bowling conjures images of pristine manicured greens, perfect parallel lines across the playing surface, perfectly shaped edges, the sounds of woods colliding and the shouts of "tea up" from the club house. The daily social gatherings, the sight of the revered green keeper tending to his "pride and joy" and of course the the obligatory hand shakes and the mutterings of the competitors saying "good game" prior to the first wood being sent.
Whenever people think or talk about crown Green Bowling the responses are always that of an old persons sport played on immaculately manicured greens, pristine surroundings and facilities. Whilst this is the case throughout the summer months there is a change and almost a metamorphosis happened by the end of September.
In this project it is my intention to explore the apparent Hibernation that occurs and to show the changes that manifest from the last games of the season through to the eagerly anticipated beginning of a new.
The once pristine greens become neglected and lonely places, the bustling clubs and buildings cast lonely forgotten shadows, the once keenly maintained surroundings become resting places for the detritus of autumn and winter.
There is also within the winter months a loss to the community, the gathering places of the summer months are now closed and the once incumbents left to find other avenues of socialising.
I intent to explore this journey and document this fascinating life cycle.
Enjoy the journey.
